Looking for a zero-waste alternative to remove tough stains without filling your home with harsh chemicals? Sodium percarbonate is undoubtedly the best-kept secret of eco-friendly cleaning.
Often confused with sodium bicarbonate, this powerful, industrially clean white powder is a natural compound that breaks down on contact with water into sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. The result? A biodegradable, toxin-free and hypoallergenic cleaner, perfect for caring for your clothes and the health of the whole family.
At L’Aixeta Verda we promote eco-friendly, sustainable and zero-waste products. Today we share the 3 main uses of sodium percarbonate to simplify your daily routines sustainably.
1. The ideal eco-friendly laundry whitener
Say goodbye to conventional bleach and harsh sulphates. Percarbonate acts as a powerful fabric whitener, restoring brightness to dull or yellowed whites.
Its performance varies with water temperature: in cold or lukewarm water (20–30 °C), it releases oxygen slowly, making it ideal for coloured laundry, delicate fabrics and maintenance washes, as it removes odours and light stains without damaging fibres or colours.
By contrast, using hot water (from 40–50 °C up to 60 °C) significantly increases percarbonate’s whitening and disinfecting power by accelerating oxidation. For this reason, high-temperature use is recommended exclusively for white or very durable fabrics, such as sheets, towels and table linen.
How to use it: add one or two tablespoons directly to the washing machine drum with your usual eco-friendly detergent. For better results with whites, wash at a minimum of 40 °C, as heat activates the release of excess oxygen that removes deep-set dirt.
2. A powerful and effective stain remover
Stubborn coffee, wine, blood or sweat stains? Sodium percarbonate penetrates textile fibres to break down dirt without damaging fabrics or aggressively fading coloured laundry.
How to use it: Make a paste by mixing one tablespoon of percarbonate with a little hot water. Apply directly to the stain, rub gently with a loofah or bamboo brush, leave for 10 or 15 minutes and rinse or wash as usual.
3. A multipurpose cleaner and disinfectant for the home
Beyond laundry, it is a useful ally for removing baked-on grease from pots, cleaning kitchen tile grout or disinfecting bathroom surfaces without releasing toxic fumes.
How to use it: Dissolve one tablespoon of percarbonate in one litre of hot water in a reusable container and use it to wipe your surfaces. Use the mixture straight away, as it loses effectiveness over time.
